The African Archaeology Group (AAG) was established in 2007 in the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research and the Division of Archaeology, University of Cambridge.  It revives the occasional seminar series on African archaeology organised by John Alexander, and was intended to provide a forum for African archaeology supplementing the Departmental curriculum.

Invited speakers, who are John’s friends, colleagues and students, will present papers on their particular geographical areas and/or research themes, looking at advances in understanding gained over the last decade and/or how the framework within which African archaeology as practised has changed, or not, over the same period. The papers may include reference to John and his contribution to their fields of African archaeology, and indicate how he may have influenced them in their research. Speakers currently include: Alan Clapham (Independent Scholar), Paul Lane (Uppsala University), Giulio Lucarini (University of Cambridge) and Barbara Barich (Sapienza University of Rome), Michael Mallinson (Mallinson Architects and Engineers), Orijemie Emuobosa Akpo (University of Cambridge), Paul Sinclair (Uppsala University), Marie-Louise Sorensen and Christopher Evans (University of Cambridge), Kate Spence (University of Cambridge).
